Tree regulations
The City of Yarra has laws in place to protect any tree that is deemed ‘significant’ on private or public land. When a tree is deemed significant, a permit and council approval is required to prune, remove or conduct any works within the vicinity of the tree.
Listed below are the criteria to see if your tree is classed as significant. If you are unsure, or you need to obtain an arborist report, don’t hesitate to get in touch for some expert advice.
Significant Tree Register
The City of Yarra's Significant policy protects trees with exceptional characteristics such as age, size, rarity, or ecological value.
Tree Diameter: The General Local Law deems a tree significant if the diameter of its trunk or trunks measured at either ground level or a height of 1.5 meters from ground level is 40cm (400mm) or more.
Should the measurement be 40cm (400mm) in diameter or more, a permit will be required to prune or remove a tree with these measurments.
Tree Protection Zones (TPZ)
There are restrictions on construction and other activities around significant trees to prevent damage.
Tree Removal Permits
A permit is required for the removal, major pruning, or any works within the TPZ of protected trees.
Applications are evaluated based on tree health, environmental impact, and public safety.
Penalties
Hefty fines are imposed for non-compliance with tree protection regulations.
