Tree regulations

Significant Tree

  • The City Of Port Phillip protects trees with exceptional characteristics such as age, size, rarity, or ecological value.

  • Tree Circumference: Local Law deems a tree significant if the circumference of its trunk measured at height of 100cm from ground level is 150cm or more.

  • Multi-stem circumference: a multi-stemmed tree where the circumference of its exterior stems equals or is greater than 150 centimetres when measured 1 metre from its base or

  • Should the measurement be 150cm in Circumference or more, a permit will be required to prune or remove a tree with these measurements.

Tree Removal Permits

  • A permit is required for the removal, major pruning, or any works within the TPZ of protected trees.

  • Applications are evaluated based on tree health, environmental impact, and public safety.

The City Of Port Phillip has laws in place to protect any tree that is deemed ‘significant’ on private or public land. When a tree is deemed significant, a permit and council approval is required to prune, remove or conduct any works within the vicinity of the tree.
